WRITING HOME: Literacy. Identity. Environment

February 14 – April 17, 2020

The York College Fine Arts Gallery (CUNY)

The Miller Gallery at the Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning (JCAL)

Statistics document the impressive ethnic and cultural diversity of Queens but, for those who live here, numbers appear hollow and rhetorical. What is it like to live/work/playlike to live/work/play within culture-fluid communities that are still becoming "home" for its residents? The 2020 Southeast Queens Biennial curators, Molaundo Jones and Margaret Rose Vendryes, invited ten artists with a significant connection to Queens to address literacy, identity, and environment with work that investigates ways of being an integral part of the borough’s fabric through visual art.  Exhibitions at the York College Fine Arts Gallery and the Miller Gallery, JCAL present work in a variety of media that can be read in more ways than one.  Allowing for open-ended definitions of literacy, identity, and environment, Queens artists compliment, and complicate, New York City life through visual narratives that are like WRITING HOME.

curators' statement

Writing Home is what you do when you are away in a place you don’t consider to be home.  Yet.  The artists who contributed to this second South East Queens Biennial present their perspective on what HOME means a Queens community member.  Each investigates, in their way, how being literate, self-identifying, and responsive to their environments can be made visual.  Through, photography, installation, sound, book arts, social practice, painting, found object, carving, doll arts, poetry, and projections, these artists delve into contemporary modes of telling that places them in the avant-garde ranks of today’s creatives.

As you spend time with the art here, and at The Miller Gallery at Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning on Jamaica Avenue, you will see familiar, and unfamiliar, reflections of home. When you find home, you recharge because YOU are home.  And when you write home, you are writing about you - your story.  The visual art that fills this room was created by individuals willing to openly share ways to describe literacy, identity, and environment.  Where they take us, distinctive and unique, is a place that contains something to learn no matter where you call home.  Take your time. Welcome to Southeast Queens.
